Business Intelligence (BI) refers to the skills, technologies, applications and practices used to help a business predict, track, analyze and present information as it relates to business performance. Common functions of business intelligence applications are OLAP, data analytics, data mining, enterprise performance management (EPM) and predictive analytics. BI transcends merely being a 'technology' - business intelligence systems require process transformation.
The ability to optimize performance within a company typically depends on a decision maker's ability to react upon the right information at the right time. Information is delivered on demand at the right time in ways that are beneficial to business leaders and optimize performance. Business Intelligence aims to support better decision-making.
The Business Intelligence market will continue to evolve by including more components into business analytic solutions. Some of those business analytic activities will be accessed via reports, dashboards or alerts to various devices, while other activities will involve more advanced techniques, such as predictive analysis.
