Back in the early 1990’s when OLAP was gaining traction, the term ‘speed of thought’ was used to describe the interaction between the slicing/dicing user and the cube. In this new era of “big data,” organizations are still grappling with getting insights from their ever-increasing data volumes.

Today, In-memory analytics are enabling knowledge workers explore this data at previously unheard-of speeds, what some are - once again - calling “the speed of thought.”

In-memory analytics have the ability to process and analyze large data sets hundreds of times faster than traditional business intelligence (BI) applications.

Business Intelligence solutions are traditionally have been housed on physical disks. With in-memory analytics, the queries and data reside in memory.

Having data and queries stored directly in memory eliminates the need for database optimization tasks such as creating indexes and aggregating data, as well as creating the full traditional OLAP cube schema.
